My Time with the HSE Team
Between 15 and 26 June 2020, I had the opportunity to dive into the world of our Health Safety Environment (HSE) department.
The two most important German laws in this field are the Act on Occupational Physicians, Safety Engineers and Other Occupational Safety Specialists (Arbeitssicherheitsgesetz, ASiG) and the Act on the Implementation of Measures of Occupational Safety and Health to Encourage Improvements in the Safety and Health Protection of Workers at Work (Arbeitsschutzgesetz, ArbSchG). These laws outline measures for occupational safety, as well as rules for company physicians and safety officers, among others.
I was allowed to join the warehouse tours on safety inside the chambers. The focus here is to inspect the warehouse chambers for hazards and safety risks, so that they can be fixed as soon as possible to ensure our employees' constant safety.
Some aspects that are evaluated: appropriate use of working appliances, unobstructed pathways and escape routes, safe storage of hazardous substances (such as cleaning agents), unobstructed and stocked up first aid kits, and ergonomic workplaces for the employees.
When it comes to health, I learnt a lot about ergonomic workplaces, work-life balance and healthy living. Some important factors in this area: sufficient exercise – which also applies when working at a desk, setting up your workplace, feeling satisfied at work, planning and prioritising tasks, and reflecting on individual stressors and how to cope with them to ensure you can reach your goals with as little stress and as much efficiency as possible.
I find occupational health and safety incredibly interesting, so the time I spent with the HSE department was great, and I wouldn't have minded spending even more time with the lovely colleagues there.
Nevertheless, I am excited to learn and see even more from other departments. Starting this week, I will join Procurement to further use and expand my knowledge.
All the best from Lena, your Ingram Micro trainee
